Art and Culture
Volusia County began its “Art in Public Places” program in 1990. This program reserves .5 to 1 percent of the construction price on all new, publicly accessible county buildings to permanently display artwork. Art in public places currently displays 200 pieces of art from 76 artists across the United States.
Parks and Trails
Volusia County offers what they are proud to call “some of the most beautiful parks and trails in the Southeast” and with over 1 million visitors annually, it would seem that many agree with them. Over 10,000 acres of park sites offer nature and multi-use trails, and as well as bird watching towers, camping, fishing, fresh and salt water boating, archaeological and historical sites, and centers for sports and recreation.
Sports in Volusia County
A wide variety of sports are open to participation like auto racing, boating, bowling, canoeing, kayaking, cycling, disc golf, fishing, equestrian, football, golf, pickleball, racquetball, running, shooting range, skate parks recreation, shuffleboard, soccer, softball, swimming, tennis, and volleyball. County Attractions
Volusia County has three attractions which display the important history and ecology of the area. They are the DeBary Historical Site, the Lyonia Environmental Center, and the Marine Science Center.
The DeBary historical site is a grand 19th Century Hunting estate, which formerly welcomed Presidents Grover Cleveland and Ulysses S. Grant as well as the future king of England, Edward VII. The site is located at 198 Sunrise Blvd, DeBary, FL 32713.
The Lyonia Environmental Center offers hands on educational programs and displays. Volunteers at the center foster a greater understanding of Volusia county’s natural environment, heritage, and the challenges it faces. The center is located at the Deltona Regional Library at 2150 Eustace Ave. Deltona, FL 32725.
The Marine Science Center promotes learning and conservation of Volusia county’s aquatic environments. In addition to general education about marine environments, one of the center’s main goals is sea turtle rehabilitation, occupants of which are viewed at the Turtle Terrace. From this point, visitors can view the pools where the center houses sick and injured adult and hatchling sea turtles. Other kinds of marine turtles and tortoise species can also be viewed at the center. The MSC is located at 123 W. Indiana Ave. DeLand, FL 32720.
The Volusia County Parks and Recreation services offer such a wide array of activities, so they have something for everyone. From its emphasis on the Arts, to its beautiful Parks and Trails, as well as its historical and environmental County Attractions, Volusia County is just waiting to be explored and enjoyed.
