East and West Martello Civil War Forts
This west tower was originally used to house troops during the Spanish-American War. Later, the fort was used as a site for radio stations and anti-aircraft batteries. The Fort East Martello Museum was opened in 1950 and became the first museum of the Florida Keys. In 1972, it was added to the US National Register of Historic Places. Works by Cuban Folk artist Mario Sanchez and the famously haunted Robert the Doll have their home here. This celebrates the important history of Monroe County and is a great addition to the must-see sites of the area.
