Brevard County Parks and Recreation

Brevard County, located on Florida’s Space Coast, provides a wide array of natural resources in its three predominant areas: the Indian River Lagoon, the forest-laden coastal ridge, and the St Johns River valley. In addition to these natural features, Brevard County also offers sports programs and other community activities, including swimming instruction and championship level golf courses.

Indian River Lagoon
The Indian River Lagoon is America’s most diverse estuary system and is home to more than 4,300 plant and animal species. The lagoon itself surrounds Merritt island and is sheltered from the more turbulent waters of the Atlantic Ocean by the barrier peninsula. Merritt island itself is home to the Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge which features a large of number of habitats for natural wildlife, including bobcats, deer, manatees, and otters.
Swimming Instruction
Through the Centennial Campaign, the American Red Cross offers Swimming Instruction for swimmers at level 3 or below. These lessons last 30 minutes and are aimed at preventing accidental drownings in the community. Free lessons are available to camp participants at the Campbell, Sandrift, Cuyler, Walter Butler, Port St. John, Travis, Woody Simpson, Cocoa West, and Joe Lee Smith locations during their regularly scheduled camp swim periods. Additional services provided by the Red Cross include lifeguard training, water safety Instructor training, and CPR/First Aid/AED training.
Golfing
Golfers will also find themselves intrigued by Brevard county’s bevy of high level golf courses. The Savannahs at Merritt Island and the Habitat at Valkaria are both par 72 courses, in addition to Spessard Holland at Melbourne Beach which is a par 67. Each course offers natural features, gritting challenges, and personable services to provide the best experience possible for golfers of all levels. Pros on site are available for individual or group instruction to improve your form.
